Why do you say you are an original, dear Albert Serra?

Why do you say you are an original? You know very well the fountains from which you have drunk, French, Italian, Russian, Spanish sources, without going further, and I would like to think at least that you know some of them in an absolute way. The fact of considering yourself original has the inconvenience of ignoring the sin of vanity, and something even more important, that same person ignores the fact that the decadence of the big meta-story (as the religions of the book, the classical politic systems…) was by the hand of criticizing totalitarian ideologies, no different from the little differences as Freud would say, a criticism that promoted fragmentation of unique thoughts, as for the subjective and sociopolitical differences (sex, family, culture, region…) that the postmodern intellectuals love so much, from which, whether you know it or not, you are a faithful supporter. I do not think you need me to elaborate with examples. But nevertheless, one proof of what I have just noted is your movie about Don Quijote (a great meta-story) and how can we forget your work on The three kings of Orient (another great meta-story that, maybe as the first one, you wanted to leave in ember, this is, without its all embracing sense).

I am not one of those who think that movies have to say something, but when they do there is no problem. You have many sources, one of the first in the postmodern field the musical work of the American innovator composer John Cae who wrote in 1952, 4’33’’. (four minutes and thirty-three seconds of silence. Cae gets on the stage, sits at his piano, does not play, at after the stated time salutes the audience and leaves). In your filmography there is another problem, and not the least: you do not manage to eradicate the sense in the great stories. As a matter of fact, something of the moral environment remains in the movies I have quoted, and it does not get better in your latest productions, as «Historia de mi muerte», 2012, and «La muerte de Luis XIV», 2016. This is when one should read Lacan´s «Kant with Sade», 1963. Because after the moral imperative of the philosopher born in Königsberg, (acceptance of the Other-unconscious in the repression of desire), comes the imperative of pleasure of the libertine Parisian (acceptance of the imperative of pleasure from the Super Ego), by which the victim and the executioner will provide themselves in the submission to the Other-unconscious.
